Dallas Bike Maps

| | Comments (1)

The city of Dallas has an extensive network of streets recommended for cyclists but most people don’t know it exists. Part of the problem is that the maps have not been available in a user-friendly format. Unfortunately, Google Maps doesn’t include these routes in their new Bicycling directions. For this reason, I’ve created a new website: DallasBikeMaps.com

Bicycling Directions Now on Google Maps

| | Comments (1)

Google Maps now has an option to get directions recommended for bicycling! To try it out, I put in my home and work addresses. Unfortunately, it suggested that I ride 0.2 miles on Northwest Highway. No thanks. I’ve done it before but I’d rather avoid it if I can. I don’t want to get arrested, after all.

Dragging the route around to try and get better directions, at one point it suggested riding on Central Expressway. “Bicycling directions are in beta.” Yeah, no kidding. They do suggest using some of the bike trails in the area, like the KT, which is nice. I wonder if there is any chance we could get the official Dallas Bike Plan routes into their system.

It also suggested an interesting alternative for getting from the KT to the Infomart. That’s one of the trouble spots on my current route so I may have to give this one a try.

"Bowling made cool"?

Park Lane Place is a 33-acre transit-orientated, multi-use, urban-style development under construction near our house. It will include apartments, condominiums, a hotel and office space as well as an 80,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market and, apparently, an “upscale bowling alley”? Huh?

Splitsville is an upscale entertainment concept featuring twelve bowling lanes, six billiards tables, a full service dinner lounge and multiple bars.

The Main Room features stone hearth pizzas, fresh rolled sushi and signature appetizers like Tuna Steak tournedos, and Thai Shrip Quesadillas.

Bus Nuts

At the bus station this morning, some guy tried to sell me an GreenSheet, or something. Pointing at the paper he says, “Yeah, I work for the ‘Gratis’ company.” I don’t know if this guy was just nuts, or what. Riding the bus, you do meet a lot of interesting people!

A Bad Case of the Mondays

My first day riding the train to work from the new house and the trains break down! We were stuck in the City Place tunnel for at least half an hour. Every few minutes, the conductor would make an announcement: “Sorry for the inconvenience. We’ll be moving shortly.” After saying that a couple of times you might as well give up because you’re loosing all credibility. Eventually we make it to Pearl St. but have to take a bus and/or walk (in the rain) to get to the other side of downtown. I finally got to work about two hours late.

I ate a banana on the way to the train but I seriously need a snack. Get some tea, grab some quarters and head for the vending machine. Hmm, no animal crackers or peanut butter toast crackers. Maybe some mini-muffins would be good but I’m 5 cents short. Back to my desk to grab a nickel and try again. But the bloody machine won’t take my f’n nickel! Walk across the office again to get some more change and cram it all into the machine. As I’m leaving the break-room, muffins in hand, some guy asks “how’s it goin’?”. I just nod and walk away.
