Google Maps now has an option to get directions recommended for bicycling! To try it out, I put in my home and work addresses. Unfortunately, it suggested that I ride 0.2 miles on Northwest Highway. No thanks. I’ve done it before but I’d rather avoid it if I can. I don’t want to get arrested, after all.

Dragging the route around to try and get better directions, at one point it suggested riding on Central Expressway. “Bicycling directions are in beta.” Yeah, no kidding. They do suggest using some of the bike trails in the area, like the KT, which is nice. I wonder if there is any chance we could get the official Dallas Bike Plan routes into their system.

It also suggested an interesting alternative for getting from the KT to the Infomart. That’s one of the trouble spots on my current route so I may have to give this one a try.

On Sunday, I started pulling up all the old tomato plants and collecting the undamaged fruit. We pretty much abandoned the garden in August but the tomatoes just kept on doing their own thing. Particularly the Gold Currant cherry tomatoes which showed an amazing resilience to the heat and drought. The red cherry tomatoes made their comeback after it cooled off so that’s where most of the green ones came from.

We are thinking about pickling the green ones. Maybe some of the others too?

Did you notice whats written on my new bike?

“Cayne Rambler”

“smart suburban and metro area regional transportation”

Thats quite a mouthful just to say folding commuter bike! :)

I took it out for a spin tonight! Oh my gosh! Hard to get used to the brakes!

I didn’t realize it before, but I must normally hold down on the brakes with my hands and put my feet out to stop or go around a sharp corner. That is definately not happening with this bike!

Put your feet down and you keep right on going.

I like the lack of cables and exposed parts though.

The brakes work fine as long as you keep pushing your foot on them.

I rode around the park a bit and down a ways on the sidewalks I will be riding on my commute home from the bus. Feels odd to be on a bike instead of on foot. Its harder to wait patiently at intersections. But at the same time, I wasn’t anxious to head straight home like I do after walking 3 miles. I cruised around my neighborhood and looked at the holiday lights.

I saw a fantastically bright and seemingly nearby shooting star. Looking up at it made me wobble, but it was worth it!

I also like the way your bike works for folding the handle bars much better than mine. Its hard for me to get the quick release tight enough to the handle bars tightly in place with relation to the wheel. Seems like that would be a safety issue if it wasn’t tight enough.

Otherwise it works great and I actually like the upright position.

Thanks for assembling the bike for me!

Comment from stu42j on 2007-12-18:

Currently, Google is only using OpenID for making comments on Blogger.com blogs. They are not publishing as an OpenID provider to allow you to use your Blogger account on other blogs. They say they are working on it.

In the mean time, you can use your LiveJournal (username.livejournal.com). Alternately, one of the cool things about OpenID is that it supports redirection. This means that any web url that you have control over (such as on Blogger) can be used as an OpenID. Basically, you would add something like this to the head section of your Blogger template:

<link rel="openid.server" href="http://www.livejournal.com/openid/server.bml">
<link rel="openid.delegate" href="http://user.livejournal.com/">

You can also sign up for a generic OpenID provider, I like MyOpenID.com, and then delegate it or use it directly.

For more details, see How to turn your blog in to an OpenID.

I looked around on the TX secretary of state page for primary info. As far as I can tell there isn’t anything special about our primary. Looks like it is open and you just show up at your polling place.

It is indeed a muscovy. or turkey duck, as i like to call them. one sex looks like that and the other is white and black. they are not the prettiest of creatures. they make me laugh waddling about my neighborhood eating bugs out of front lawns. mine are rarely bothered by people, cars, bikes, dogs, etc, either.

Thats amazing! I thought I saw something odd, but I just ignored it and focused on the white colored clothing!

For a second, I thought it was bigfoot. (By the way, did you know there have been bigfoot sitings in Texas? In the Angelina forest. I believe!!!)

I’ve been riding my bike to the bus stop and have found a back way to work from where the bus drops me off. Its working out great!

The other day, a school crossing guard stopped traffic for me to cross the main road. It was pretty funny.

I was going along watching this video thinking ok, maybe its not so bad and enjoying the 70’s look, remembering my youth, when all of a sudden it said, people riding bikes can never be trusted so its up to the people driving cars to watch out for them!!!!!!

What!!!!! I’m the one on the road who can’t be trusted??????

How many times have I gotten caught in an intersection where I am on the crosswalk, in clear view, with a traffic light that says its ok for me to go, and a car turns left into the intersection who can’t stop to wait for me because it has turned in front of oncoming traffic coming toward it? More times than I care to remember! Scares the heck out of me.

Actually, it’s an inadvertent argument in favor of riding legally and vehicularly, so the motorists DO see you.

ALSO, about 6:44 into the video, it appears to me that the new driver violates the cyclist’s right of way at an uncontrolled (no stop signs or traffic lights) intersection, nearly T-boning him. “She likes me.” I’d hate to see what she’d do if she DIDN’T like the guy. Then she tries to door a cyclist at 7:43. They didn’t claim she liked him. Maybe he jilted her and it was an attempt at payback.

I wonder how much farm land costs on the outskirts of Tokyo? Probably you have to inherit it.

What are all those gadgets you took pictures of in the hotel room?

I really wish they’d put the official Dallas map route on there. The official route’s PDFs are not very accessible or handy to most folks, yet they have really nice routes for cyclists.
